Alfredo Herrero, age 71 of Canyon, passed from this life on October 4, 2024 at home, surrounded by his family.
A celebration of Al’s life will be on Saturday, October 26, 1:00-3:30PM at Sunrise Event Center, 13111 Zita Road, Amarillo, TX, 79118. He will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery in 2025.
Al was born in San Jose, California, to his parents, Daniel and Maria de Los Angeles Mercado, on November 17, 1952. At the age of 17, Al bravely joined the US Army, a decision that would shape his life. He served for 34 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 in logistics in 2004.
He married Carrie Corder in 2000, and they spent much of their time together traveling the world. They moved from California to Henderson, Nevada, in 2018 before deciding to get closer to the family by moving to Canyon in 2021. They joined the Canyon Elks Lodge and the American Legion in Canyon and made many new friends.
Al had a passion for working in the yard and his shed (1500 sq ft). He always was in the middle of a project and was known for his willingness to help family members and friends at their homes.
Al's passion for books was undeniable, much to Carrie's dismay. Between his homes in Henderson and Canyon, it is estimated that he has over 2000, and most are signed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Rebecca Bower.
Al's love and commitment to his family were unwavering. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Carrie Herrero; his sons, Jose Herrero and Daniel Herrero; his daughter, Alicia Barbosa; his brother, Ricardo Herrero; twelve grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Canyon Texas Elks Lodge or The American Legion, Darren Tate Post 425
