Lowery Gene Spencer

May 10, 1940 — April 14, 2022

Amarillo

Family and friends must say goodbye to Lowery Gene Spencer, 81 of Amarillo, Texas.
Lowery joined our Lord on April 14, 2022. He was born to James Forrest and Daisy
Naren Spencer on May 10, 1940 in Burnsville, MS.

He is survived by his children Mace Wayne Spencer and Michelle Dawn Hawkins, both
of Memphis, TN. He was a proud grandfather to, James Cody Spencer, Maceson
Spencer, Faith Hawkins and Ethan Hawkins of Memphis, TN and Stephanie Spencer of
Pulaski, TN. His sister, Kathy Underwood, resides in Tupelo, MS.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, James and Daisy Spencer. Two sisters,
Juanita Spencer of Jackson, TN and Sue Toal of Baltimore. He lost his oldest son
James Jody Spencer in a tragic construction accident at age 27 and his son Mark Layne
Spencer of Memphis to cancer this past year.

He was handsome in his youth and continued to be so as a silver fox. He supported his
family working for the Chicago railroad and as a machinist for Bell Helicopter and
Pantex in Amarillo. He enjoyed buying and selling at flea markets during his retirement
years. A historian at heart, his home library could fill an entire bookstore. He loved
books, westerns, documentaries and enjoyed talking about simpler days on Poppy’s old
home place. He was a simple and non-materialistic man who raised his children to be
strong, independent and self-reliant. He did not care for technology or the basic
comforts it brought. It was said that Lowery should have been born a hundred years
earlier as he was content to live his life with a fireplace cooking over an open flame.
This was how he chose to live.

His ashes will return home to Love Joy Cemetery in Burnsville, MS to rest in the
Spencer family plot. A private memorial will be held on Father’s Day, June 19, 2022 in
Tupelo, MS.

We take comfort in knowing that he was a Christian and rejoice that he is reunited with
his loved ones. He will be greatly missed and deeply mourned by all.
